Terminology Associated with Space Rocks


  • Asteroid: An object greater than 50 meters wide, in a position between he surface of the earth and interplanetary space. The Tunguska object was estimated to be about 60 yards, making it an asteroid.
  • Meteor: The visible, burning fireball streaking across the sky as a meteoroid or asteroid burns in the atmosphere.
  • Meteorite: The remnant of the meteoroid or asteroid that strikes the surface of the earth.
  • Meteoroid: An object with a general size between a grain of sand and 50 meters (half a footbal field) between he surface of the earth and interplanetary space.
